 DIRECTORS

Density Arts, Inc. is a nonprofit organization chartered in New York state which is dedicated to the advancement of contemporary flute music. Through commissions of new work for the flute, collaborative projects, performances, and innovative educational endeavors, Density Arts provides a platform for the development of the flute in the 21st century.

 

Density Arts is a volunteer-run organization governed by a board of directors and advisors from a broad range of cultural fields.

Amy Roberts Frawley, President
 
 
 
 
 
 
Amy Roberts Frawley enjoys institutional positions, consulting and freelance commitments. The constants of her years in the field are mentorship/career development for emerging artists, artist management, event production, development and advocacy for living composers. Prior positions include director of Merkin Hall at the Kaufman Music Center, curator of performing arts at the public garden Wave Hill and executive vice president of Concert Artists Guild (CAG). At Merkin, Ms. Frawley produced TimesTalks for the New York Times, Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen, the Ecstatic Music Festival and created the series Only at Merkin with Terrance McKnight. At Wave Hill, projects included spoken word artists and the Trisha Brown Dance Company performing landmark works across its outdoor landscape. In her prior employment with CAG, Ms. Frawley was its Executive Vice President. In addition to her current position as CAG's Director of Engagement, her consultancies include those with Terrance McKnight, Nkeiru Okoye and Da Capo Chamber Players.

​Marcello Di Russo is an Italian composer, educator, and arts administrator based in Brooklyn, New York. His passion for music, ignited in his teenage years, led him to pursue an A.A. in Liberal Arts with a focus on Music from LaGuardia Community College, a B.Mus in Composition with a minor in Music Recording Technology from the Brooklyn College-Conservatory of Music, and an M.A. in Arts Administration from Baruch College. Currently, he serves as an Adjunct Lecturer in Music at LaGuardia Community College and contributes to several arts organizations across New York City. Beyond his musical career, Marcello has over a decade of experience coaching youth and professional basketball teams in Italy. His dedication to sports continues in his current role as the Head Coach of the City College of New York Women's Basketball Team.
 
Marcos Balter
 
 
 
 
 

Praised by The Chicago Tribune as “minutely crafted” and “utterly lovely,” The New York Times as “whimsical” and “surreal,” and The Washington Post as “dark and deeply poetic,” the music of composer Marcos Balter (b. 1974, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is rooted in experimental manipulations of timbre and the hyper-dramatization of live performance. Past honors include the American Academy of Arts and Letters Music Award, a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship, the Tanglewood Music Center Leonard Bernstein Fellowship, and two Chamber Music America Awards. Balter resides in New York City, where he holds the position of Fritz Reiner Professor of Musical Composition at Columbia University. For more information, visit www.marcosbalter.com.

 
Suzanne Farrin

​​Suzanne Farrin is a composer whose works have been performed around the world. Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times called her first opera, dolce la morte, a work of “shattering honesty.” Her debut recording, Corpo di Terra, was described in Timeout Chicago, “like field recordings from inside the cerebral cortex.” Recent commissions include works for The Parker Quartet, Talea, The Library of Congress, Sō Percussion, JACK Quartet, and The International Contemporary Ensemble. She was a 2018 Rome Prize Winner and a 2020 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition. Suzanne is the Frayda B. Lindemann Chair of Music at Hunter College and The C.U.N.Y. Graduate Center, where she directs the Ph.D. program in composition. She is a performer on the ondes Martenot and has been featured in concert, film, and television. She holds a doctorate in from Yale University. Her next opera, Macabéa, will be premiered at the Theatro São Pedro in São Paolo, Brazil and National Sawdust in New York in 2026. ​​

Bruce Hodges​​

Combining a lifetime of writing with a passion for new music, Bruce Hodges grew up in Texas and spent most of his life in New York City, before moving to Philadelphia. He has written for The Juilliard Journal, Lincoln Center, London's Southbank Centre, Playbill, Strings magazine, and Overtones, published by the Curtis Institute of Music. Currently, in addition to his longtime contributions to The Strad (also in London), he writes for WRTI, Philadelphia's public radio station affiliated with Temple University.
